Foreclosure crisis over, Polk courts are breathing easier now

A decade ago, a collapsing housing market triggered an avalanche of foreclosures that nearly brought the civil court system in Polk County and across the country to its knees.

Judges and court clerks grappled with an unprecedented flood of foreclosure lawsuits that no one had seen coming, and for which they were unprepared.

In 2013, as Polk County crawled its way through more than 7,500 backlogged foreclosure cases while new cases flowed in daily, the state Legislature stepped forward with $21.3 million in additional funding statewide, enabling Polk and other counties to bring in senior judges and additional staffing to break the logjam.
