A year into their marriage last August , Paula Soares and Brian Zink decided to buy a 100-year-old condo in East Cambridge that needed a little work. They figured they could save money by doing the repairs themselves.

But , as it goes with old houses in New England, home renovation can quickly become an archeological project. Zink soon was spending his nights and weekends stripping layers of crumbling wallpaper and generations of gluey linoleum.
